2027 Volvo EX60 Review

Introduction - Find the best Volvo EX60 deals!

It is difficult to convince people that electric vehicles (EVs) are the future when battery-powered options are so expensive compared to their internal combustion counterparts. With the EX60, Volvo is finally addressing that issue, creating an all-new crossover SUV with a starting price similar to its plug-in hybrid XC60. It is priced right and, more importantly, extremely good.

The 2027 Volvo EX60 is a two-row, five-passenger SUV available in three powertrain configurations. The base P6 is a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive model with 369 horsepower and 307 miles of range. Next is the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) P10 with 503 hp and 322 miles of range. Finally, the P12 delivers 670 hp and 400 miles on a charge. Base prices range from $59,795 for the P6 to $62,145 for the P10, while the top-shelf P12's starting price has not yet been set.

For this 2027 EX60 review, Volvo provided a test vehicle equipped with the P10 Ultra trim and the following options:

  • Forest Lake paint
  • 22-inch wheels

The test vehicle’s manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $69,545, including the $1,395 destination charge to ship the SUV from the Torslanda, Sweden, assembly plant to a local dealership. The price does not reflect any current rebates, incentives, or price adjustments since Volvo manufactured the test vehicle.

Independent Expert Opinion: Design, Comfort, and Utility

Volvo has done a great job of creating EVs like the little EX30 and the larger EX90 that look fresh while still maintaining that sophisticated Scandinavian family appeal. The EX60 closely follows the same template, carrying over many styling cues from the three-row EX90, but in a smaller package that will be more appealing to those with smaller families.

Well, small in terms of numbers, anyway. If your family is tall or large in volume, you are in luck because the EX60 is surprisingly roomy. A glass roof that tints at the touch of a button provides both ample headroom and great light in every seat. The front seats are particularly good, offering just enough support while still providing plenty of comfort. On the P10 Ultra trim I drove, they even provided a refreshing amount of ventilation without the drone that can be a real bother in EVs.

Front seats and the steering wheel are also heated, as are the outboard seats in the second row. The combination of a flat floor and generous legroom gives the back seat a very roomy feel. Crossing my legs was no problem, nor was sliding from one side to the other, as you might need to do to climb out of the SUV.

Materials throughout are quite good, and I particularly enjoyed the Tailored Wool Blend upholstery. It looks and feels great, but it may not be the best for those with kids or messy pets. In that case, opt for the leather or synthetic Nordico.

In terms of cargo space, the EX60 offers 20.4 cubic feet behind the second row. Fold those down, and that expands to 58.2 cubic feet.

Independent Expert Opinion: Volvo EX60 Infotainment System Review

The primary user interface in the 2027 EX60 is a 15-inch, vertically oriented touchscreen that sits right in the middle of the dashboard. Volvo's software interface here looks much the same as I saw on the EX90 earlier, with a stark interface that is easy to learn and quick to navigate.

It includes:

You will be reaching for that touchscreen quite often, as everything from media controls to navigation to interior climate settings is handled through the touchscreen. You do at least get a small roller wheel beneath the display for adjusting volume, a welcome addition, but I still miss the large round knob found on earlier Volvos.

Opt for the Ultra trim, and you get a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos sound system that delivers strong fidelity and channel separation, creating a stellar listening experience.

The steering wheel thankfully also has physical controls, a step back from the capacitive touch buttons used on so many cars these days. It is an extremely small wheel, which feels a bit awkward to use, but it does provide an unobstructed view of the 11.4-inch gauge cluster behind it.

The hallmark of Volvo's infotainment system is its deep integration with agentic AI. This means you can have far more comprehensive conversations with your car than you would expect from standard voice recognition. Getting directions to your closest Starbucks is, of course, possible, but more importantly, you can find the local coffee shop that makes the best flat whites or a spot for lunch with reliable gluten-free options.

Much of this is thanks to the Google Gemini integration, which makes a world of information available via voice. Sometimes you will have to wait, though. Gemini responses sometimes came so slowly that I thought the system had forgotten I had asked for something. Also, curiously, during my testing, I got a different voice for navigation than for Gemini, and a third voice when adjusting vehicle settings.

Independent Expert Opinion: Driving the 2027 Volvo EX60

That tiny, squared-off steering wheel that greets you as you sit in the EX60 almost makes it feel like reaching out to take control of a petite sports car. Once underway, Volvo's latest EV quickly dispels that impression. Despite the 503 hp on tap here, the EX60 is a very relaxed car to drive.

Don't get me wrong: it accelerates quickly. Volvo officially rates it at 4.4 seconds to 60 mph. But even with its adaptive suspension on the stiffest setting, the EX60 P10 does not have much of an air of urgency. It will get through corners quickly if you like, with plenty of grip and stability, but without much enthusiasm.

Part of that comes down to slow steering, which makes the EX60 feel like it is in no hurry to reach the apex of the turn. This can also be attributed to the relaxed suspension, which, even in its firmest setting, still allows the SUV to pitch and roll.

The EX60, therefore, is not a machine for hard driving, but that is perfectly okay in my book. Not everything needs to be sporty. This is an SUV that is far more enjoyable at a more relaxed pace, when you can appreciate the stellar ride quality of that adaptive suspension. That said, I did get a chance to drive a P6 with fixed springs and found it very comfortable as well.

The EX60 is also near-silent at any speed, rolling through city streets without distraction and even getting up to speed on the highway without wind noise becoming a bother.

The EX60 offers a one-pedal driving mode. At maximum regen, it brings the SUV to a complete stop smoothly and predictably, which means I rarely needed to use the brake pedal during my test drive. But if you prefer an EV that coasts, it will do that too. Regenerative braking can be turned off entirely if you prefer.

In terms of efficiency, the P10 I drove, with 22-inch wheels, is rated for 312 miles on a charge of its 91-kilowatt-hour (kWh) usable battery pack. In my testing, I achieved 4.1 miles per kWh, which would equate to a theoretical maximum range of 373 miles.

When it is time to juice up for the next go, the pack charges at a maximum rate of 370 kilowatts, which Volvo says is enough to add 165 miles of range in 10 minutes.

Independent Expert Opinion: Volvo Pilot Assist Safety Features Review

Photo: Tim Stevens

Every 2027 Volvo EX60 comes with a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including:

The adaptive cruise system on the EX60 worked well on both rural roads and the highway, identifying traffic ahead in plenty of time to adjust speed. The lane centering system also worked well in most situations, even on poorly painted lanes. The only issue was an annoying tendency to drift to the right whenever an exit lane formed, with the SUV wanting to follow the off-ramp rather than staying in its lane.

That was the only real annoyance, but something is missing here: hands-off driving. Volvo does not offer any hands-free mode on the EX60, even though such features are increasingly common in this segment. That is a disappointing omission.

As of this writing, the EX60 has not been crash tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Independent Expert Opinion of the 2027 Volvo EX60 - Find Volvo charging stations near you

The new 2027 Volvo EX60 is more than just the next logical step in filling out the company's electrified lineup; it is a killer SUV that is as great to drive as it is to admire, both inside and out. Some may see the EX60 as an electric alternative to the XC60, but in reality, it is a better SUV across the board. Given the comparable pricing, it is a stellar choice.
