Crossovers have become a dominant vehicle type in the U.S. new-car market in recent decades. But many consumers might still be confused by the term "crossover." The term describes a vehicle with an SUV-style body based on a car rather than a truck platform. Crossovers use unit-body construction rather than the body-on-frame construction of a traditional SUV.
Car buyers appreciate the multiple advantages of crossovers. Since crossovers ride on car platforms, they handle more like a car than a truck. Another advantage is their elevated driving position, which gives drivers better visibility. In addition, they provide excellent passenger and cargo space. Small and compact crossovers usually offer seating for five. Moreover, most midsize crossovers seat between five and eight people. The best crossovers blend all these traits—handling, visibility, space, and comfort—seamlessly into one complete package.
Since automakers build their crossovers on the same basic architecture as passenger cars, most offer front-wheel drive. At the same time, many crossovers give buyers the choice of all-wheel drive. This renders significant safety advantages, especially in bad weather. All-wheel drive also delivers off-road capabilities. Today's crossovers even feature advanced driver assistance and collision avoidance systems like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot warning.
A considerable number of crossovers present shoppers with powertrain choices. If you seek a gasoline engine, a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or a battery-electric vehicle, you can find great crossovers that will fill the bill. Of course, hybrid and PHEV crossovers furnish excellent fuel economy, but even conventionally powered crossovers often return better gas mileage than SUVs of similar size and capacity.
Whether you desire a small, midsize, large, or luxury crossover, you will find several excellent choices in today's market. Our list of the top crossovers will give you a great place to start your search.
