BMW is one of the few automakers still offering a small and affordable two-door luxury coupe, with the 2025 BMW 230i and M240i set to go on sale by the end of the year. A recent total redesign gave the entry BMW, which will now start at just over $40,000, more technology and a bulbous appearance. For its fourth year on sale in this new generation, the small coupe receives some new paint colors, an available M Sport appearance package, and an updated infotainment system.
The 2025 2 Series Coupe is available with one of two engines; the model names indicate which powertrain it has. A turbocharged four-cylinder powers the base 230i, while the M240i upgrades to a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. A manual transmission is no longer available in the 2 Series, only in the high-performance M2 model, and each 2025 2 Series uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, while xDrive denotes BMW’s all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, available on both 2 Series Coupe models.
BMW significantly redesigned the 2 Series for the 2022 model year, and the appearance remains mostly unchanged for the 2025 model year. However, a new M Sport Professional package—available on the 230i and standard on the M240i—adds visual flare. The package adds unique lights, a rear decklid spoiler, and black exterior trim. It also upgrades the brakes, and on the 230i, you can get red or blue brake calipers, but the M240i only gets the red ones. Two new metallic exterior paint colors are available too: Vegas Red and Skyscraper Grey.
BMW’s expansive curved displays are proliferating into interiors across the lineup. For 2025, the 2 Series, which has a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment display, uses BMW’s iDrive 8.5 system. For a minimalist approach, all climate controls are within the touchscreen or via voice command.
Two new steering wheels are available inside the 2 Series Coupe: a standard two-spoke design or a flat-bottom leather-wrapped wheel on the M240i. Additional upholstery options, including multiple leather selections, are also available.
The base 230i uses a 255-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard across all 2025 2 Series models, though xDrive is available on both. M240i models upgrade to a more powerful turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine that makes 382 hp and, according to BMW, will propel the coupe to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds with AWD. Its top speed reaches 155 mph.
BMWs are going fully digital, and the new 2 Series is the latest model to rely entirely on the screen for nearly all interior controls, including climate. The system runs BMW Operating System 8.5 on the 14.9-inch touchscreen, and the latest iDrive system uses quickly selectable widgets on the Home screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities are standard for seamless smartphone integration across all models.
BMW is the last automaker to offer a small, affordable luxury two-door coupe, as the competition of small sport luxury cars like the Audi A3 and S3 has four doors. Shoppers looking for more interior space should look at larger sedans like the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4. Both German compact cars don’t offer manual transmissions either. Those looking to row their own gears should look to the Acura Integra, which has a turbocharged four-cylinder and front-wheel drive.
