Not many cars evoke the charm and fun-to-drive spirit of a Mini, especially with the open-air bliss a convertible provides. The 2025 Mini Cooper and Cooper S Convertible have arrived, and the droptop four-seaters are focused on providing an enjoyable driving experience.
Mini builds the two Convertible models alongside the Cooper three-door Hardtop at its manufacturing plant in Oxford, England. Both the Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Convertible will be available in either Classic Style, which has black trim on the front grille and synthetic leather seats, or Favoured Style, which has a silver grille, 17- or 18-inch wheels, and beige houndstooth fabric on the dashboard.
When they arrive in the United States in January 2025, the Cooper Convertible will start at $34,945 and the Cooper S Convertible at $38,195, including the $995 destination charge. Mini says a sportier John Cooper Works variant will soon be available.
The 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible models have the same smooth design as the rest of the Mini lineup. Still, unlike the Hardtop Mini revealed earlier in 2024, the Convertible models retain the same taillights. There are still the classic round lights with LED bulbs and a new grille with an octagonal look in either gloss black or silver.
Mini says you can retract the convertible roof in 18 seconds at speeds under 19 mph. You can also partially open the roof like a sunroof. The 2025 model also sees the return of the “Always Open Timer,” which shows how long you’ve been rolling around town with the roof down on the digital display if you have nothing else to brag about.
Customers can specify the Mini Convertible in one of 11 exterior colors with either a black fabric soft top or an original Grey Union Jack color and 17- or 18-inch wheels. When you open the Mini’s doors, the car projects a welcome and goodbye animation on the ground with its puddle lamps.
Minis have long had circular central infotainment systems, and the new Convertible models have a floating 9.5-inch OLED touchscreen that pairs with a head-up display instead of a traditional gauge cluster behind the steering wheel. The rest of the cabin features a simplistic, modern design with two-tone fabric materials on the dashboard and door panels.
The 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible features two turbocharged four-cylinder engines that Mini says “deliver the brand’s signature go-kart feel.” The base Cooper model has a 161-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the Cooper S has 201 hp and 221 pound-feet of torque from its 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Mini pairs both engines with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for quicker shifts. Mini says the Cooper S Convertible will reach 60 mph in under seven seconds.
Drivers can choose from one of seven Mini Experience Modes that change the ambient lighting and interface of the infotainment system, depending on the mode. For example, in Go-Kart Mode, red dominates the display and ambient lighting on the door panels and dashboard.
Mini’s Driving Assistant Plus package, available on the new Cooper Convertible, includes more advanced lane-keeping technology. Mini also equips the Cooper Convertible with 12 ultrasonic sensors and four surround-view cameras for its Parking Assistant Professional park-assistance feature.
Small, affordable, fun-to-drive cars are dwindling. In the $30,000 range, though, there are more composed apex carvers like the Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N Line, and Volkswagen Golf GTI, but none offer the open-air fun of a Mini Cooper Convertible. If you primarily want a budget-friendly convertible, the only other option is a Mazda MX-5 Miata.
