2026 Volkswagen Jetta Preview

Warren Clarke | Apr 17, 2026

The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact sedan with plenty of room for passengers and cargo, and it receives only a couple of minor changes for 2026. That makes sense, since it benefitted from a significant refresh for the 2025 model year.

For 2026, all Jetta sedans gain rear-seat pretensioners that tighten seat belts in the moments before a crash, protecting passengers by removing slack and keeping them firmly in place. Additionally, wireless App Connect is now standard across the Jetta lineup, enabling Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring without cables. Finally, the Jetta SE gains a standard sunroof, and the SEL trim level now includes a premium audio system.

Pricing for the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta starts at $25,270, including the $1,275 destination charge.

Despite their compact dimensions, some small cars offer pleasant rewards in passenger and cargo space. The 2026 Jetta fits the bill, offering more space than you might expect. This VW provides 37.4 inches of second-row legroom, surpassing rivals like the Mazda3 and Nissan Sentra. With a 14.1-cubic-foot trunk, the Jetta has enough space to accommodate luggage and grocery bags. It has more cargo room than compact cars like the Toyota Corolla.

Buyers can choose from four trims. The S is the most affordable, and the Sport and SE fall in the middle. The SEL is the most expensive trim and the one to get if you want top-tier amenities.

The S rides on 16-inch wheels and includes LED headlights, cloth upholstery, an 8-inch infotainment display, and wireless App-Connect for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Stepping up to the Sport adds 17-inch wheels and heated front seats. Choose the SE if you want amenities such as CloudTex synthetic leather upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat. The top SEL trim includes 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear outboard seats.

There is only one engine available for the 2026 Jetta. All trims feature a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder, producing 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels.

The base S trim is the most fuel-efficient, returning 34 mpg combined. All other trims achieve 33 mpg combined.

Many drivers rely on driver assistance features to help keep them out of harm's way on the road. Volkswagen equips every 2026 Jetta with a comprehensive suite of driver assist features. All trims include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, and active blind spot warning. Adaptive cruise control is also standard.

The Jetta is excellent if you want a roomy, well-equipped small sedan, but other choices may be better matches for some buyers. The most budget-conscious shoppers will want to consider picks like the Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4, and Nissan Sentra; all are more affordable than the Jetta. If fuel efficiency is a priority, check out the gas-sipping Toyota Prius, which gets much better mileage than the Jetta. Last but not least, for an even sportier experience, and the only way to get a Jetta with a manual transmission, you should consider the Jetta GLI.
