With gas prices up, SUV buyers are looking to automakers to offer new models with excellent fuel economy. However, due to SUVs' inherent size and weight, it's no easy task. After all, an SUV must offer its buyers reasonable capability and interior accommodations to fulfill its mission. That presents a significant challenge for car manufacturers. To be successful, they must walk a tightrope between low fuel consumption on one side and vehicle usability on the other.

To strike the right balance, carmakers are increasingly employing more sophisticated powertrains in their SUVs. Nowadays, it is not unusual to see SUVs with mild-hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel drivetrains. Of course, the most fuel-efficient SUVs are the recent spate of electrified models.

However, simply being fuel efficient is not enough to satisfy the needs of most SUV buyers. Versatility and cargo space are essential, too. Many buyers also want top-notch off-road capabilities. Ironically, some brands known for their all-terrain prowess say that their SUVs which lead in fuel efficiency, are also their most capable.

When all is said and done, even the best fuel-efficient SUVs must still be SUVs. That means they can transport more people and more of their stuff than the typical sedan. It means they will offer their drivers a command-of-the-road driving position. And quite often, it means they will deliver the safety and security of all-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.

This list of the most fuel-efficient SUVs provides a quick, easy reference to the top options.
