You want to buy a Crossover but don't want to pay much for gas. We get it, and we're here to help. A decade ago, the most fuel-efficient SUVs were, by and large, small crossovers. They offered great fuel economy, but their diminutive size diminished their overall utility.
These days carmakers have improved the all-around usefulness of their high-mileage crossovers by adding hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. This enables larger, more accommodating vehicles like compact and even midsize crossovers to find places on the high-MPG roster. The potential downside of this trend is the higher prices that hybrids and PHEVs require. When reviewing the overall cost of ownership, one must weigh fuel-cost savings against the added acquisition costs of a crossover with a hybrid or PHEV drivetrain.
The good news is that hybrids' premium prices seem to be shrinking. Further, plug-in hybrids typically offer a substantial number of battery-electric-only miles. If your daily driving matches up well with the battery-electric range, you might seldom buy gasoline at all. Another big plus: plug-in hybrid crossovers tend to be more powerful and more fun to drive than their gas-only counterparts, in addition to providing excellent fuel economy. It's a win-win.
There are other pluses, too. The best mileage crossovers have sophisticated infotainment systems offering colorful wide-screen digital displays. Their operating systems integrate well with smartphones for navigation, music, podcasts, and shopping. Additionally, many crossovers provide advanced driver assistance systems, including lifesaving techs like automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning.
These best mpg crossovers will give you a great place to start your money-saving search.
